Artificial intelligence and higher education: a prospective analysis of challenges and opportunities

This paper conducts a systematic review on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, with a focus on its ethical, pedagogical and technological challenges and opportunities. Using the PRISMA method, we examined research published between 2020 and 2024 in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science and ERIC, selecting 20 relevant studies under specific criteria related to higher education and key topics. The results show that AI has great potential to personalise educational processes, optimise learning and increase institutional efficiency. However, ethical concerns also arise, such as data protection, algorithmic system and equity in access to the technology. In education, the need to combine technological advantages with human interaction to ensure quality education is highlighted. On the other hand, from a technological perspective, barriers related to infrastructure, teacher training and resistance to change in institutions are identified. This analysis concludes that effective implementation of AI in higher education requires a holistic approach that addresses these issues. It also proposes recommendations that promote responsible use of AI, emphasising collaboration between technologists, educators and policymakers to maximise its benefits.
